Tuesday, 27.07.2010, 01:10pm (GMT+5.5)

By OUR STAFF REPORTER
Kashipur, 26 July:
A vigilance team from Haldwani today caught the Assistant Commissioner of Block-3 in the act of taking a bribe of Rs 15,000 from a wood trader. The officer was caught during a raid at the office of the tax office, here, which created panic among the officers working there.
According to available information, the vigilance team was sent after one Mohammad Yakub complained to SP RP Sharma at the Haldwani Vigilance Office against the Assistant Commissioner of Block-3, Abhay Kumar Pandey, and Commercial Tax Officer Yogesh Mishra by writing him a letter. The complainant said that the two officers had asked him for Rs 1 lakh as bribe otherwise tax would be levied on his business. When the wood-trader expressed his inability to pay the amount, they negotiated the price to Rs 15,000.
The Vigilance Officer said that being a government officer, the erring Assistant Commissioner’s phone was being tapped for the past week with permission from the administration. The other officer, Yogesh Mishra, was successful in leaving the office on a tip-off about the raid, before the vigilance team arrived.
