Kedarnath portals to open today, preparations complete
Thursday, 30.04.2009, 11:23am (GMT+5.5)

By Our Staff Reporter
Rudraprayag, 30 Apr:
The Badrinath Kedarnath Temple Committee has completed all the preparations for the opening ceremony of the Kedarnath shrine. The portals of Kedarnath will be thrown open for visitors on Thursday.
The Doli (Palanquin) of Kedarnath moved from Gaurikund early morning, today, and reached Kedarnath at 2 p.m.
Around three thousand devotees have already arrived in Kedarnath to attend the opening function. The Badrinath Kedarnath Temple Committee is expecting a gathering of over five thousand by Thursday.
Commenting on the preparations, Anil Sharma, Executive Officer, BKTC, said, “We annually send an advance party for the repair and other works of the shrine. The BKTC has completed all the preparations for the opening ceremony. The opening of the portals will take place at 6.15 a.m. The ceremony will be a half an hour affair.”
The Doli of Kedarnath reached its summer abode after four days. During the winters, the idol of The Deity is worshipped at Omkeshwar temple in Ukhimath. From Ukhimath, the Doli reaches Guptkashi on day one, Fata on day two, Gaurikund on day three and Kedarnath on day four.
Gaurikund is the last road head to Kedarnath. After that, one has to trek 14 kms to reach the Kedarnath shrine. The steep climb and low oxygen at that height makes movement physically exhausting. Among the Char Dhams, the trek to Kedarnath is the toughest of all. To Yamunotri, the trek is of 6 kms. Both, Badrinath and Gangotri are located on road head.
