U’khand Police retain title
By OUR STAFF REPORTER
DEHRADUN, 27 July
: In an exciting title clash, Uttarakhand Police defended the District Football League title beating Eleven Star, 1-0. Both the teams were on 21 points in the league. For Eleven Star, a win was a must, while the police team could even have settled for a draw to get the title on the basis of goal average.
The match was played in fine weather, though there was a drizzle and a damp field. While Eleven Star looked determined to score, the police looked as if it was playing for a draw from the beginning, itself. But the rivals kept them busy throughout the match. Eleven Star received an early jolt when its first goalie Surendra Payal was seriously injured and had to replaced. Eleven Star could not utilise star striker Deependra properly. The midfielders failed to create chances for him. Despite all the odds, he continuously kept the Police Defence engaged.
The technically better Police team made several dangerous moves, but the strikers squandered away the chances on reaching the 18 yard box.
The first half ended goalless. The title winning goal for the Police came in the 67th minute through Sher Singh. Hefty ‘Sheru’, exhibiting his fine dribbling skills and taking full advantage of his body, dribbled past the line of rival defenders to find himself one to one with the goalie. He neatly placed the ball into the side of the net to take his team to a title victory.
Shashank Mamgan of Garhwal Sporting was awarded the Highest Scorer of the League Award with an astounding 10 goals. It was his second consecutive year to get this Award. Wills Youth Club was awarded the Fair Game Trophy.
Chief Guest, MLA Ganesh Joshi, BJP leader Pushkar Singh Dami, SSP GS Martolia gave away the trophies to the winners.
