If I could keep my grandparents from ever going ..
Wednesday, 28.07.2010, 12:29pm (GMT+5.5)

By Sonali Sharma
When
I was a child, they pampered me. When I cried, they cheered me up. Forgiving me for every single mischief, they blessed me a thousand times. They were always present to hold my hand when I got naughty and ensured that those little fingers of mine learned to read and write. They have been God in disguise for me, whom I simply call Grandpa and Grandma.
Grandparents are a blend of, both, a child and mature adult and the best part is that they know how to perform their role in life. They always have a way out for every problem and that too with long interesting stories of their own experiences. They laugh when we are happy and cannot hold their tears when anything bad happens to us. They are the ones who can do anything to bind their family and, indeed, do so many things, silently.
Grandparents are a treasure of invaluable familiarity with almost everything related to our world. Whether it is asking Grandma how to prepare a delicious dish or to learn from her how to embroider a dupatta artistically, or even waking her up at midnight so that she could prepare those instant home remedies for those odd stomach aches.
She was always ready for us and that too without a slightest frown on her face.
On the other hand, Grandpa always made sure that we knew every single story related to the Indian Independence. Whether it was Maharana Pratap or Rani Laxmi Bai, the Mughals or Britishers, Grandpa always filled excitement in our childhood through his anecdotes. Apart from this, how can we ever forget going on those long evening walks with him and then returning home with hands full of sweets, sugar candies and sometimes balloons?
They were the ones who always saved us from our mother’s scolding and hid us from dad’s disciplining; and when we used to get good grades in school, they were more proud then our parents. While doing so many things for us, our grandparent never demanded anything in return. If they did, then it was just a few hours to spend with them. Sitting next to them and talking to them on whatever one’s heart felt like was the best gift we could give to them. No matter how much busy we are, this is what each one of us should and must do because we owe a lot to our grandparents.
Reaching the final phase of their lives, grandparents remain the most important and integral part of society. Though times are changing, yet the importance of our grandparents in our lives will always remain same. As time is moving fast and somewhere in my heart I fear that I will lose them one day, I believe that I have with me a beautiful ‘today’ to spend with them and give them every little happiness and a thousand reasons to smile so that they remain at peace when they meet God.
Hence, love your grandparents as they are God on Earth for us. Serve them as best as you can, because in bringing us up as young responsible human beings, they must have sacrificed much comfort in their lifetime.
