Glimpses of Indian Agriculture
Sunday, 11.09.2011, 11:43am
Agriculture ‘is not a technical manual on agriculture. It is not a
detailed statistical account of a commodity, or group of commodities. It
is not a review of the institutions engaged in agricultural research in
the country. It is not a policy document with clear ‘guidelines’ on how
to address issues in Indian agriculture. It does not follow a
systematic pattern, and often meanders along the thought patterns of its
individual authors. It is not written for an academic audience, and is
not peer reviewed. Yet, it is perhaps more useful for both the lay
reader, and the policy mandarin than any of the ‘manuals/policy
documents’ mentioned above.

Cost of staying ‘fit’
Most people these days have honed their skills in putting up the best façade possible, not only before the public and the unknown faces, but also when confronting the known ones. “To prepare the face, to meet the faces that you meet,” so runs a line in “The Love Song of J Alfred Prufrock“, a poem by TS Eliot, the great poet of the 20th century. The very thesis behind whatever we think, believe

To Doon or Not to Doon is Not the Question
Friday, 22.10.2010, 01:36pm
Govind Dhar, batch of 1997
Time and again I have been asked by anxious mothers why they should send their sons to Doon. Most times, I’ve been put up to the conversation by Dosco husbands who have already lost this battle of words. But no matter how many times I have this conversation, I learn the same thing. It doesn’t matter how well-appointed your school is, how glorious its alumni or how your alma mater places you in the wider world; the fact is that if a parent is dead set against parting with their child for his or her formative years, it is pointless debating the Doon or not to Doon question. The notion of boarding school itself becomes questionable and that’s under-standable. What is not understandable to me, however, is how parents might deprive a child of a boarding school education because they’d rather have the child to themselves. That’s a reason against boarding school I don’t subscribe to. First of all, I am a parent and I have registered my son at Doon. Secondly, I myself had a miserable time for the first three years of my tenure at Chandbagh. But more importantly, it was my own decision to continue at the school that eventually led me to face my fears and comprehend my problems. Staying at home and spending quality time with parents has its upsides, but being away has potentially greater ones, depending upon each child’s propensity to a boarding school education. So for all those anxious parents out there, this question is not about Doon; it is about the idea of a boarding school and whether a child at the age of 11 can thrive in such an environment. Besides the tortuous separation anxiety, parents mainly fear that their children may be left open to a variety of ungovernable dangers including poor tutelage, peer pressure, abuse and bullying. But most of all, parents feel they miss out on the most valuable years in their children’s’ lives. All bona fide concerns, but as opposed to the former reasons, the latter can be mostly self-centred. No parent should ever hold a child back from unlocking his or her potential by ruling out a fundamentally tougher education system. Time and again parents insist that everything that can be learnt at a boarding school can be done so at a day school, but I disagree. While both institutions instil a sense of the wider community, discipline, hard work and all-round participation, it’s that awakening of a sense of self-determination and motivation that puts the boarding school experience a notch above. Moreover, the experience of literally growing-up with your peers instead of your parents is truly unique and nurtures camaraderie like no other. Sleepless nights and separation anxiety form part of the equation, but only partly. Boarding school is no cake walk, but the life-long results that prevail, speak volumes. Ideally, parents should consider opting for a boarding school if there’s a chance their child will come to grips with his or her environment, and excel in it. However, presuming potential and denying someone an education that goes beyond the classroom and sport, is short-sighted and regrettable. Parents should first let their children get into Doon before deciding that they must grow outside of it. If your child is unable to thrive in a boarding school environment, it becomes evident - housemasters, teachers and friends are quick to spot someone who simply isn’t cut out for the system. And that’s the cue for you to know that your child may be better off in a different environment. I say, cut the umbilical cord and see what happens. Remember, it is a small minority of boys that get withdrawn from Doon and perhaps that number ought to increase if children do not take to the system or show results from its rigours. But for your child’s good, you must consider it. After all, we won’t know if it’s any good, if we don’t even try.
